The Washington State Association of Head Start & ECEAP Parent Ambassadors (WSA) is a parent leadership and advocacy program for low-income parents involved with Head Start and ECEAP in Washington and Zero to 8 programs. The program is based on an empowerment model of peer to peer training and education. Parent Ambassadors assist the Association’s efforts to bring parent voice forward, advocate for increased investments in Head Start and ECEAP and related 0 to 8 children and family programs, issues and concerns.
Parent Ambassadors are part of a sustainable cadre of parents leaders and advocates who continue to move the needle for positive social change for children and families and work on early learning issues at the local, state and national levels. Twenty Parent Ambassadors from across Washington state are accepted each year, receiving training on leadership development, legislative advocacy, community engagement and grassroots organizing, and are responsible for training parents in their local programs and since 2009, 140 Parent Ambassadors have been trained. The Parent Ambassador program is now partnering with Seattle Educare to expand with an additional yearly cohort of parents focused in White Center, WA – one of the most diverse communities in the US.
