On May 16, 2022, the final day of the National Gathering, UPLAN organized an advocacy day to lift up the voices of families. Close to 100 parent leaders and member staff held nearly two dozen federal legislative meetings to champion family policy priorities, including child care and early education, immigration and real parent engagement.
As parent leaders, we arrived in Washington, D.C., with a broad range of experiences — from first-time federal policy advocates to those with years of experience voicing concerns for equitable policies.
UPLAN parents’ testimonies shape advocacy asks
Jasmine Taylor of Hustle Mommies, a single mother of two from Chicago, Illinois, had never attended a federal legislative visit.
Taylor expressed her gratitude for the other parents who were advocating alongside her for policies to improve families’ lives. “It was enlightening and very powerful. I was grateful to share what we parents go through. Having the support and understanding and just someone willing to help to raise the bar was really heartwarming because we really need that hope,” said Taylor.
Taylor felt compelled to use her voice to speak in favor of families who are struggling to ensure their children get a good education and adequate resources. As a single mom working in a school cafeteria, Taylor herself experiences the hardship of paying for transportation to work along with childcare.
First-time federal advocacy experiences
Shantal Ferrell, mother of four from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a member of Parents for Healthy Homes. Ferrell had experience advocating for families at the local and statewide level. However, this would be her first time speaking up for parents at a federal level. She was nervous.
“I wanted to be very prepared. The fact that there were three of us and we could bounce off each other and help one another made it easier. I felt more comfortable,” shared Ferrell.
Ferrell’s personal struggle seeking help after her two-year-old daughter was diagnosed with lead poisoning led her to advocacy work. “There was no accountability, or anyone who I thought would step in and help the situation,” explained Ferrell. She felt the need to speak up and joined Parents for Healthy Homes. The organization connected her to other mothers sharing the same experience. They decided to use their negative experience to make positive changes in their community.
Parents speak up for all who struggle
Melissa Harding, from Jackson, Maine, is a mother of four young children. Harding started her advocacy journey after one of her boys was diagnosed with a rare medical condition. Harding began advocating for the care and resources her child needed. This led her to speak out in favor of early childhood education and childcare as a parent leader with Maine State Parent Ambassadors.
“There are so many families affected by the disparities within the systems that are supposed to help them. Not everyone can use their voice, so it is important to me to make sure I use mine to advocate not only for my family, but for all families,” shared Harding.
All three parent leaders gained confidence with each experience of lifting their voices. By the end, all three mothers felt empowered to continue collectively advocating for national policies benefiting families – recognizing that the issues families face in their communities are similar to those across UPLAN’s membership.
La Voz de Padres se Eleva a Nivel Federal
El 16 de mayo de 2022, último día de la Reunión Nacional, UPLAN organizó un día de abogacía para elevar las voces de familias. Cerca de 100 padres líderes y miembros del personal celebraron casi dos docenas de reuniones legislativas federales para abogar por las prioridades de la política familiar, incluyendo el cuidado infantil y la educación temprana, la inmigración y la participación real de padres.
Como padres líderes, llegamos a Washington, D.C., con una amplia gama de experiencias – desde los que abogan por primera vez por la política federal hasta los que tienen años de experiencia expresando sus preocupaciones por las políticas equitativas.
Testimonios de padres de UPLAN dan forma a la abogacía solicita

Taylor se sintió impulsada a utilizar su voz para hablar en favor de familias que luchan por garantizar que sus hijos reciban una buena educación y recursos adecuados. Como madre soltera que trabaja en la cafetería de una escuela, la propia Taylor vive las dificultades de pagar el transporte al trabajo y el cuidado de los niños.
Primeras experiencias de abogacía federal

“Quería estar muy preparada. El hecho de que fuéramos tres y de que pudiéramos apoyarnos unos a otros y ayudarnos mutuamente lo hizo más fácil. Me sentí más cómoda”, dijo Ferrell.
La lucha personal de Ferrell en busca de ayuda después de que a su hija de dos años se le diagnosticara envenenamiento por plomo la llevó al trabajo de abogacía. “No había ninguna responsabilidad, ni nadie que pensara que iba a intervenir y ayudar en la situación”, explicó Ferrell. Sintió la necesidad de alzar la voz y se unió a Parents for Healthy Homes. La organización la puso en contacto con otras madres que compartían la misma experiencia. Decidieron utilizar su experiencia negativa para realizar cambios positivos en su comunidad.
Padres levantan la voz por todos los que luchan

Las tres madres líderes lograron ganar confianza con cada experiencia al alzar sus voces. Al final, las tres madres se sintieron capacitadas para seguir abogando colectivamente por políticas nacionales que beneficien a las familias, reconociendo que los problemas a los que se enfrentan las familias en sus comunidades son similares a los de todos los miembros de UPLAN.
