UPLAN Parents Mobilize on ‘Public Charge’ Rule!

UPLAN is working to oppose the Trump administration’s proposed ‘public charge’ rule which would force some immigrant families to choose between meeting basic needs like food and health care, or securing legal status to live in the U.S. Parents from across the country are mobilizing their communities to learn about the rule and submit public comments against it. UPLAN’s goal is to collectively submit at least 500 public comments, and parents are leading the charge! These are just a few examples of UPLAN member actions.

Parent leaders with Abriendo Puertas, Partnership for Community Action, and Somali Parents Education Board (SPEB) incorporated mini-workshops on ‘public charge’ into their meetings and trainings.

Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE), National Parent Leadership Institute (NPLI), and Choice for All – Family Leadership Network adapted UPLAN’s fact sheet and materials and shared them with parents.

Washington State Association of Head Start & ECEAP (WSA) Parent Ambassadors and Community Organizing and Family Issues (COFI) are partnering with state and local organizations to amplify awareness of this harmful rule.

One leader from Parent Engagement Academy (PEA) had over 50 one-on-ones with immigrants in her community on the impact of the proposed rule and the importance of taking action!

We lift up the work of all of UPLAN members who are committed to this campaign. Please contact UPLAN to tell us about what your organization is doing. The deadline to submit a public comment is December 10, 2018. Click here to submit one today!
